On August 9, 2025, New Mexico State University Police Sergeant Wright stopped to investigate a vehicle that was parked very close to another vehicle in a nearly empty parking lot. The driver of the badly parked vehicle was a 19-year-old woman. She denied consuming alcohol and stated that she was simply bad at parking her vehicle. However, Sgt. Wright noticed an open 24-pack of beer in the vehicle. Sgt. Wright called for Officer Montoya to come to the parking lot in order to perform a Driving While Under the Influence (DWI) investigation. The woman was asked to perform standardized field sobriety tests. At the end of the tests, she was placed under arrest for DWI. She was adamant that she had not consumed alcohol and she refused to submit to a breath test. This elevated her charge to Aggravated DWI. She was also charged with minor in possession of alcohol. Her case is still open and all suspects are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
