After 8 PM on July 16, 2023, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, police were called to a home after a 5-year-old boy was found unconscious and not breathing. The child had cerebral palsy, could not speak, and was almost completely dependent on his caregiver. As officers investigated, they discovered he was severely malnourished and weighed only about 13.6 pounds. The investigation later uncovered troubling signs of prolonged neglect, including weight loss, missed school, and missed medical appointments. Marcella Mantalango was later arrested and charged with child abuse resulting in death.
