On March 1, 2025, Richland Police Officers and Washington State Patrol (WSP) Troopers responded to a motorcycle versus SUV collision. The driver of the SUV was off-duty WSP Trooper Sarah Clasen. She claimed she was picking up a food order from Domino's Pizza when she turned left and a speeding motorcycle, ridden by a 20-year-old man, crashed into the front of her SUV. A Richland traffic investigator arrived on scene and asked Ms. Clasen to perform standardized field sobriety tests, including a portable breath test. She declined. She was eventually arrested on suspicion of Driving Under the Influence. A search warrant was obtained for her blood and the toxicology report revealed her blood alcohol level to be 0.17% (more than twice the legal limit). The motorcyclist passed away due to his injuries and Ms. Clasen has been charged with Vehicular Homicide Under the Influence. Her case is still open and all suspects are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
