A routine traffic stop uncovers a driver's profound emotional distress and a startling reason behind her erratic behavior, leading to a complex impaired driving investigation. On April 22, 2022, Officer James Perz initiated a traffic stop after observing a silver 2015 Hyundai driving erratically towards a landscaping trailer. This stop followed a report from a school staff member, who indicated a potentially impaired teacher had just passed them. Upon contact, the driver informed the officer she was having a panic attack, though clear indicators of impairment were observed, prompting a call for backup. Officers Miller and Styles arrived to take over the DUI investigation. The driver, visibly distraught, explained she had been instructed to leave the school. After initial hesitation, she complied with requests to exit the vehicle and perform field sobriety exercises. She exhibited significant difficulties during the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test, failed to touch heel-to-toe and turned improperly during the Walk and Turn, and could not maintain balance during the One Leg Stand test. During this interaction, she revealed a recent job offer from Hillsborough County had been retracted, contributing to her emotional state and her supervisor telling her to go home. Based on her erratic driving and inability to adequately perform the exercises, the driver was placed under arrest for driving under the influence. A subsequent search of her vehicle yielded six bottles of vodka. While she initially refused, she later agreed to provide breath samples at the police department. Her breathalyzer results indicated alarming BAC levels of 0.311% and 0.305%, nearly four times the legal limit of 0.08%. The driver was cited for DUI and transferred to the Pinellas County Jail, also admitting to officers a previous DUI arrest. --- Transparency through the lens of the law.
