Please like, comment, and SHARE! 🙏 🔍 Episode Overview: On July 26, 2023, at around 10:05 PM, Sergeant Frank Mazza from the Middletown Township Police Department noticed a 2014 Honda driving at 65 MPH in a 50 MPH speed limit zone on SR 36 southbound. A check on the car's registration revealed that the driver had a suspended license and an active ATS warrant from South Amboy. He conducted a traffic stop, and the car came to a stop on Avenue C. Sergeant Mazza approached the driver, identified as 41-year-old Joelle Casale. Upon reviewing her driver’s license, he found that the vehicle lacked an ignition interlock device, which was required by a court order due to a previous DWI arrest. Sergeant Mazza explained to Joelle the reason for the stop. As he spoke with her, he noticed a smell of alcohol coming from the car. When he asked her where she had been, she said she had been at South Stevens Pub in South Amboy, New Jersey. After taking her documents, Sergeant Mazza went back to his patrol car and called for another police vehicle to come to the scene. Officer John Mania arrived a short time later. After Joelle acknowledged that she had been at a bar and showed signs of impairment, Sergeant Mazza offered her a chance to participate in field sobriety tests. He began with the alphabet recitation, which Joelle managed to complete without difficulty. The next test was the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. During this assessment, Sergeant Mazza noted all six signs of impairment. The third test was the One Leg Stand, where Joelle struggled and fell several times due to poor balance. Finally, during the Walk and Turn test, she failed to step heel-to-toe and turned incorrectly. Sergeant Mazza arrested Joelle for driving under the influence after noticing her slurred speech, the smell of alcohol, her confession to drinking, and her failure to complete field sobriety tests. A search of her car turned up an open Steel Reserve beer. According to John’s Law, the vehicle was impounded and held for 12 hours. Officer Mania stayed at the scene to wait for the tow truck. Afterward, Sergeant Mazza took Joelle to the Middletown Township Police Department for processing. At police headquarters, Joelle listened as the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators was read to her and agreed to provide breath samples. After a 20-minute observation period, she took the breathalyzer test. The results showed her blood alcohol content (BAC) was 0.099%, which exceeds the legal limit of 0.08%. Once the processing was complete, Joelle was placed in a jail cell until she sobered up because she could not find anyone to sign the Potential Liability Warning form for her. Sergeant Mazza issued several summonses to Joelle, including operating under the influence, refusal to take a chemical test, reckless driving, failure to install an ignition interlock device, having an open container of alcohol, and driving with a suspended license. Public records show that Joelle was arrested for her first DWI in Old Bridge on August 3, 2022, and for her second DWI in Hazlet on October 26, 2022. She has also been stopped several times in Highlands, Aberdeen, and South Amboy for driving with a suspended license.
