On Friday, December 13, 2024, at 9:43 p.m., the El Paso County Sheriff's Office received a call from a woman reporting that her husband was armed with a gun and holding it to his head. Deputies responded to the residence, but the husband had already left. A "Be on the Lookout" (BOLO) notification was issued, including his identity and a description of his vehicle. Later that evening, at 11:00 p.m., Colorado Springs Police officers were dispatched to the 3800 block of Astrozon Boulevard for a report of an active shooter. The caller stated that his cousin worked at a restaurant being fired upon. Upon arrival, officers found a man armed with a handgun sitting in a pickup truck in the parking lot. The man was holding the gun to his head. Officers ordered him to drop the weapon but backed away and attempted to deescalate the situation when he did not comply. Officers quickly identified the man as the subject of the earlier BOLO issued by the El Paso County Sheriff's Office. Due to the risk to public safety and the potential for the man to flee, additional officers were called to secure the area and contain the situation. Over the next 55 minutes, officers worked to deescalate and establish communication with the individual, who fired his handgun multiple times inside the vehicle during the standoff. At one point, the man exited the truck with the gun still pressed to his head. Approximately a minute later, an officer deployed a non-lethal 40mm foam round, striking him in the stomach in an attempt to disarm him. Pepper spray balls were also used to gain compliance. Despite these efforts, the man fired two shots: the first toward officers and a nearby business to the south, and the second, seven seconds later, directly at another group of officers to the north. In response, multiple officers returned fire, hitting the man several times. He was then taken into custody, and officers, along with the Colorado Springs Fire Department's tactical medical team, provided emergency aid. A loaded Glock 27 .40 caliber handgun was recovered at the scene. Despite efforts to save him, the suspect, identified as 33-year-old Dean Ackerman, was pronounced dead on site. 0:00 - Preview 0:10 - Summary of events 0:34 - Officer bodycam 2:48 - Shooting 3:21 - Drone video of the shooting 4:02 - Medical aid #ElPasoCountySheriff #ColoradoSpringsPolice #DeanAckerman #PoliceStandoff #ActiveShooterIncident #LawEnforcementResponse #GunViolence #PublicSafety #NonLethalForce #OfficerInvolvedShooting #EmergencyResponse #ColoradoNews #BreakingNews #CrimeReport #PoliceDeescalation Disclaimer: The following content contains graphic scenes of violence that may be disturbing to some viewers.
