On the morning of November 25, 2021 Newton County Sheriffs were dispatched to a residence involving a dispute between two adult siblings. The sister reported to the Trooper that her brother Kevin was reading the bible, thinking it was written about him, and accusing her of being a witch. The woman told the Trooper that she didn't think he was on drugs, however, she did mention that his pupils were dilated. This led the Troopers to believe that the man was high on meth, but it was never confirmed or denied. Troopers tried to speak with Kevin when he opened a door, and they ordered him to come out of the residence. He refused and tried to re-enter the home and force was used to break open the door, and tasers were used upon Kevin once the Troopers were able to kick in the door. The tasers seemed to have little effect on Kevin, and he as able to rush towards one of the Troopers, who was continuously issuing an electrical charge via the taser as he backed away from Kevin. A Trooper deployed pepper spray in Kevin's face with little effect. Another Trooper later remarked that he got some of the spray in his face. Kevin's sister told Troopers that there were two adults in the house other than Kevin, and Troopers used their squad car loudspeaker to coax the two adults safely out of the house. Once they were out of the house, Troopers tried to get Kevin to exit the house. As the Troopers continued to make contact with Kevin by shouting and with loudspeakers, one of Kevin's dogs came within view of one of the Troopers' body cameras, who shot the dog with a bean bag cartridge from a 12ga non-lethal shotgun. Another Trooper deployed his taser on the dog, and the dog could be heard yelping in pain out of view of the camera. Shortly thereafter the Troopers noticed smoke starting to exit from one of the broken windows on the second floor, with flames erupting from the windows not long after that. The Fire Department was dispatched, however, it the fire was out of control at that point.
