Police on Friday shared video of a fatal shooting last month in which a man appeared to open fire on officers and taunt them in the South Side neighborhood. The footage shows body-worn camera footage from two Houston Police Department officers and a sergeant who were dispatched Dec. 26 to the 3500 block of Corder Street after a report of gunfire, authorities said. The officers — a one-and two-year veteran — confronted 41-year-old Christopher Johnson in the street and he began shooting at them, police said. One officer heard the sporadic gunfire from inside his vehicle and got out to join his colleague. “Is that shots,” he asked. The other officer confirmed and told him that one of the bullets already hit the front of his vehicle. “He’s shooting dead at me, bro,” the officer continued, as the two took cover behind the cruiser. Another gunshot rang out from Johnson’s direction, the footage shows. The officers repeatedly told him to lower his weapon as he stood in the street. Johnson can be heard telling the officers to lower their voices and then saying, “Boom, boom boom,” all while making a pointing motion at the sergeant. “How do you wanna f—ing do it,” Johnson said, according to the video.” The officers opened fire when Johnson again ignored their requests to lower the weapon and appeared to raise his right arm. Medical examiner records indicate Johnson was shot multiple times. The footage next shows Johnson lying motionless in the street with what appears to be a pistol next to him. The officers call for paramedics. On the night of the shooting, Chief Troy Finner said the shot man was wearing what appeared to be a tactical vest. At times, Johnson can be seen wearing a vest and a logo on the front. A holster appears to be on his right hip. At the time of Johnson’s death, he was wanted on an assault of a public servant charge stemming from a December 2020 incident at Ben Taub Hospital. He assaulted a nurse while trying to leave the hospital, according to court records. Prior to that charge, Johnson’s last arrest in Harris County was following a 2003 aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge. He completed five years of deferred adjudication on the case.
