A teacher's claim of a panic attack during a traffic stop unravels into a complex DUI investigation with startling results. The incident began on April 22, 2022, when a staff member from a local school approached an officer on extra duty, reporting a potentially impaired teacher. The officer quickly located a silver 2015 Hyundai driving remarkably slowly and erratically, veering towards a landscaping trailer. Upon initiating a traffic stop, the driver informed the officer she was experiencing a panic attack, a claim that conflicted with observable indicators of impairment. Recognizing the need for a specialized DUI investigation, the initial officer called for backup, and Officers Miller and Styles soon arrived to take over the case. The situation escalated as the driver was asked to exit her vehicle to perform field sobriety exercises. Initially, she refused, citing distress from being instructed to leave the school. However, after further interaction, she eventually complied. Officer Styles commenced the standardized field sobriety tests, beginning with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test, followed by the Walk and Turn and One Leg Stand exercises. During the Walk and Turn, the driver failed to maintain heel-to-toe contact, executed an improper turn, and took an incorrect number of steps. The One Leg Stand test also revealed significant impairment, as she struggled to raise her foot correctly and placed it down before the test was completed. Based on the observed erratic driving and the clear inability to adequately perform the field sobriety exercises, the individual was placed under arrest for driving under the influence. During the arrest process, she admitted to officers that she had a previous DUI arrest. A subsequent search of her vehicle, conducted incident to arrest, yielded six bottles of vodka, further solidifying the evidence of impairment. Although she initially hesitated, the driver later agreed to provide breath samples, and was transported to the police department. There, her breathalyzer results registered at 0.311% and 0.305% Blood Alcohol Content (BAC), figures nearly four times the legal limit of 0.08%. Officer Styles issued a citation for DUI, and the individual was then transferred to prisoner transport for booking into the Pinellas County Jail. This incident highlights the critical role of law enforcement in identifying and addressing impaired driving, even when faced with alternative explanations from drivers. --- Transparency through the lens of the law.
