An officer's concern for safety prompts an early end to field sobriety exercises, revealing immediate signs of impairment. The incident began late at night when a witness reported an erratic driver who had damaged a sign. Officers quickly located the black 2016 Jeep and initiated a traffic stop. During the initial contact, the officer noted several indicators of impairment, prompting him to ask the driver to exit the vehicle and participate in field sobriety exercises. However, after starting the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test, the officer terminated the exercises due to safety concerns when the driver appeared unstable and was questioned about her ability to stand on her own. She was subsequently arrested for driving under the influence, and a search of her vehicle revealed an open container of alcohol. Following processing, the driver pleaded guilty to operating under the influence and unsafe operation, facing fines and mandatory participation in an intoxicated driver resource center, along with an ignition interlock device requirement. --- Transparency through the lens of the law.
