On June 15, 2023 at approximately 1:07 AM, Deputy Randy Miller observed a 2019 Rav4 being driven without its tail lights activated on Main Street in Colfax, Washington. He followed the vehicle and proceeded to initiate a traffic stop at 506 N Main Street, which was practically across the street from the Whitman County Jail! The driver, 29-year-old Katie Jo Maurer, exhibited signs of impairment. Katie told the Deputy that they had attended the Beartooth concert in Spokane earlier that evening. Deputy Miller asked Katie if she had consumed alcohol, and she admitted to having 2 drinks in the hours prior. Based on her admission to consuming alcohol, Deputy Miller afforded her an opportunity to perform voluntary field sobriety tests. Deputy Petersen also arrived on scene around this time to assist with the traffic stop. The first exercise involved the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN), where Deputy Miller observed the lack of smooth pursuit and distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation. The second exercise was the Walk and Turn test, and Katie was unable to walk a straight line and she turned improperly. The final exercise was the One Leg Stand test. During the One Leg Stand test, Katie was unable to maintain her balance and counted to 23 during the passage of 30 seconds. Following the voluntary field sobriety tests, Katie was asked to voluntarily take a PBT test, and the result was 0.113%. Based on her admission to consuming alcohol, her inability to adequately perform the field sobriety exercises, and the results of her PBT test, Deputy Miller placed Katie under arrest for driving under the influence. Deputy Petersen offered one of her sober passengers the opportunity to take a PBT test and his BAC was at 0.00%, so they allowed him to driver her vehicle instead of having it towed. Katie was subsequently transported across the street to the Whitman County Jail for further processing, where she agreed to take a breathalyzer test. Deputy Miller read the Implied Consent Warnings to Katie, and she waived her Miranda rights by agreeing to answer questions. After the 20-minute observation period was complete, Katie submitted breath samples. Her Alcotest results indicated a BAC of 0.089%, which was over the legal limit of 0.08%. She was cited under RCW 46.61.502 for driving under the influence and booked into jail pending her DUI hearing because she was unable to post bail at $500. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, and consider supporting this channel (email us for more information).
