On July 3, 2024, Rio Rancho Police Officer Haughney observed a vehicle fail to stop at a stop sign. He initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle, which was being driven by a 41-year-old woman. At one point, the vehicle began reversing towards Officer Haughney and he had to reverse backwards to avoid being crashed into. He then observed the vehicle drive onto the curb, almost hitting a tree. He called the driver out of the vehicle and while attempting to detain her in handcuffs, she became uncooperative and resisted. While placing the woman into the back of his patrol unit, the woman attempted to kick Officer Haughney in the face. Once inside the police vehicle, she slipped out of the handcuffs. While being placed back into handcuffs, she kept resisting officers, so she was taken down to the ground. At the police station, she was asked to perform standardized field sobriety tests, but she was too intoxicated to understand the directions. She did, however, provide breath samples and the results were 0.21% and 0.20% BAC. While waiting in the holding cell, she vomited.
