A routine attempt to stop a stolen SUV in Fayette County, Georgia, quickly turned into a high-speed police pursuit when the driver refused to stop. On January 21, 2026, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office received information about a vehicle reported stolen out of Newnan. After hearing the description of the red SUV, Lieutenant Akin began looking for the vehicle. At approximately 2:45 p.m., Lt. Akin and Deputy Sheriff Nelson spotted the SUV near Brooks Woolsey Road and Antioch Road. When Lt. Akin attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the driver refused to pull over and accelerated away. The pursuit reached speeds of more than 115 miles per hour. As deputies were preparing to terminate the pursuit, the SUV ultimately rolled over near Brooks Woolsey Road and the Highway 85 Connector. Deputies discovered that the driver was a 17-year-old juvenile who had also been reported missing by the Newnan Police Department. The teenager was removed from the overturned vehicle and reportedly suffered no major injuries. According to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, the juvenile faces numerous charges, including stop-sign violation, speeding, reckless driving, driving too fast for conditions, driving without a license and giving a false name to an officer, among other charges. The juvenile was denied bond and remained in the Fayette County Jail.
