A routine stop for a disabled vehicle quickly escalates as an officer detects signs of severe impairment in the driver, leading to a complex roadside investigation. On May 21, 2023, a sergeant with the Union Beach Police Department observed a 2020 Toyota SUV with a flat tire on Shore Road and initiated a welfare check. Upon contact, the officer noted the 45-year-old driver's slurred speech and detected a strong odor of alcohol, prompting a further inquiry into her condition despite her denials and refusal to provide documentation. After offering field sobriety exercises, the driver failed to follow instructions and exhibited significant instability, leading to her arrest for operating under the influence. Subsequent processing revealed a blood alcohol content significantly over the legal limit, resulting in multiple summonses, including reckless and careless driving, before her release to a responsible party. --- Transparency through the lens of the law.
