#news #police #arrest #cops #shoplifting Report: On 04/02/2022, Officer responded to a possible shoplifting in progress at a local store. The caller described a black male wearing a black shirt, black backpack, and black pants putting things into a paper bag. Officer arrived and observed a subject matching the above description standing at the counter. Officer got the suspects attention and attempted to identify him. Officer asked his name and informed him why the officer was there. The officer again asked him for identification. He repeated the question back to the officer. Based on him not complying with lawful command, the officer instructed him to take off the backpack and attempted to detain him in handcuffs. The officer instructed him again "Put your hands behind your back. Put your hands behind your back. You're just being detained. You're just being detained." But he continued to pull away from the officer. The officer gained control of both his arms by soft hand control of his elbows. The officer attempted to calm him saying that he would be placed in handcuffs but he continued to refuse. The suspect stated he was going to pay for the items. He again began to pull away from the officer stating "I'm not resisting". The officer disengaged from him, took a couple steps back, removed my Taser from its holster, turned it on, and pointed it at the male. The officer gave him verbal commands to put his hands behind his back and get on the floor. The suspect followed the commands and the officer placed him in handcuffs (BB/DL). During the altercation a wallet, liquor bottle, and bank card were dispersed on the floor. He continued to move around and grab onto items. The officer assisted him to a standing position. The assistant manager informed me that the suspect had placed a gray hoodie into his bag a pair of shoes. The suspect stated "I was going to pay for that". The officer escorted the suspect out to a patrol car. While walking out of the door, The suspect pulled himself into the door. On search of his person the officer found only $40.00 US currency in cash in his right pocket. The suspect told the officer he was shopping and placed an item in his bag. He repeated that he was shopping and intended to pay for the items. A male walked up and also provided his birthday and home address matching the GA ID. He informed the officer that his backpack was recently stolen from a local Frat house. His wallet was in the backpack. He had just found a transaction on his bank card at a local gas station and had come to investigate the fraudulent charge. Once noticing officers at the store he went in search of his items. The victim searched through his backpack and wallet stating $40.00 US currency was missing from his wallet. The suspect was transported to the Clarke County Jail.
