It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: On August 6, 2023, around 9:25 PM, Officer Jazmin Wright from the Tampa Police Department responded to a crash at Dick's Sporting Goods parking lot, located at 258 Westshore Plaza. She arrived to find a white 2017 Kia Forte with heavy front-end damage after hitting a 2023 Tesla. Officer Wright approached the driver, who was later identified as Angelique Zohou Banks. As she talked with Angelique, signs of impairment became visible. Officer Wright called a DUI officer to assist. Soon after, Officer Thomas Baden arrived. He spoke with Angelique and her boyfriend. The boyfriend initially claimed he was driving to protect Angelique. When asked their heights, he said he was 6 feet tall, and Angelique was 5’2”. Officer Baden then questioned why the seat was pushed forward if he had been driving. The man struggled to answer. Angelique then admitted she was the driver. Because Officer Baden suspected she was intoxicated, he asked her to perform some field sobriety tests. The boyfriend kept interfering, so the officer placed him in Wright’s car without handcuffs while he conducted tests with Angelique. First, Officer Baden performed the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. He noticed her eyes had jerky movements, didn’t follow smoothly, and showed nystagmus early. Next, he asked Angelique to do the Walk and Turn test. She failed to keep her heel to toe, made improper turns, and took the wrong number of steps. Lastly, he had her do the One Leg Stand. She didn’t lift her foot correctly and put it down before the test was done. Based on the crash, her signs of impairment, and her poor performance, Officer Baden arrested Angelique for DUI. He took her to Central Breath Testing. She agreed to give breath samples. Her results showed BAC levels of 0.244, 0.221, and 0.249. All were around three times the legal limit of 0.08.
