A routine speeding stop quickly unravels as an officer detects signs of impairment from a driver who admits to recent alcohol consumption and reveals she is pregnant. The incident began around 7:48 PM when Patrolman Michael Poon observed a 2015 Toyota Camry traveling 85 MPH in a 55 MPH zone on Route 15 North, necessitating a second officer to initiate the stop due to the vehicle's excessive speed. Upon Patrolman Poon's arrival, he detected the distinct odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from the driver, leading him to request her to exit the vehicle for further assessment. During the subsequent interaction, the driver confirmed she had consumed approximately two glasses of wine earlier and disclosed her pregnancy. Based on these admissions and the observed indicators, Patrolman Poon offered standardized field sobriety exercises, which the driver agreed to perform. The field sobriety tests, including the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test administered by Patrolwoman Arlene Lippencott, revealed multiple signs of impairment. The driver failed to adequately perform the Walk and Turn and One Leg Stand exercises, exhibiting staggering, balance issues, and improper foot placement. Consequently, Patrolman Poon placed the driver under arrest for operating under the influence. Following her arrest, a vehicle search was conducted, and her husband, who also admitted to consuming alcohol, was transported to police headquarters by Patrolwoman Lippencott. At headquarters, the driver provided breath samples, resulting in a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of 0.14%.
