Louisville, Kentucky — A construction worker from Kentucky has filed a lawsuit against a state trooper, claiming he was assaulted and wrongfully arrested during a 2024 traffic stop that allegedly began with a seatbelt violation. The plaintiff, identified as Dawson Blevins, says Trooper James Cameron Wright demanded he step out of the car, and when Blevins attempted to film the stop, Wright declared him under arrest. According to the lawsuit, Blevins was slammed to the ground, repeatedly tased, and sprayed with chemical irritant even as he lay on the pavement insisting he couldn’t move his arms due to severe pain. Lawyers for Blevins say he sustained two spinal fractures during the encounter and spent several months in jail before prosecutors dismissed all charges earlier this year. The civil case comes on the heels of Wright’s federal indictment in 2025 for a string of unrelated excessive force incidents dating back to 2020. Bodycam video from Blevins’ arrest, now released, allegedly shows Wright shocking him with a Taser while ordering movements that were physically impossible to comply with. The complaint also accuses Wright of falsifying his arrest report to justify his actions. Despite a history of misconduct claims, Wright had once been celebrated as “Trooper of the Year” in 2021.
