On August 20th, 2025, Deputy Christopher Olin with the Whitman County Sheriff's Office stopped 24-year-old Annie Tran for driving 36 mph in a 25 mph zone on NE Merman Drive in Pullman, Washington. During the traffic stop, Deputy Olin immediately detected the strong odor of alcohol and observed multiple signs of impairment. When questioned, Annie admitted to consuming two shots and a vodka cranberry approximately 2-3 hours before driving. She believed she had waited long enough for the alcohol to metabolize. Annie was asked to perform standardized field sobriety exercises, including the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test, Walk and Turn test, and One Leg Stand test. She displayed multiple indicators of impairment during these exercises. A preliminary breath test revealed a BAC of 0.118%—significantly above Washington's legal limit of 0.08%. Based on the totality of evidence—excessive speed, odor of alcohol, admission to drinking, failed field sobriety tests, and elevated BAC—Annie was placed under arrest for Driving Under the Influence. At the Pullman Police Department, Annie consulted with an attorney before agreeing to submit evidentiary breath samples. During the 15-minute observation period before testing, she mentioned seeing other Whitman County DUI videos on TikTok and expressed concern about potentially appearing online herself. She even recognized one of the videos as featuring her neighbor. Annie's evidentiary breath test results showed: First sample: IR 0.104 / EC 0.111 Second sample: IR 0.109 / EC 0.117 Throughout the arrest and booking process, Annie remained cooperative despite her obvious distress about how this incident might affect her future career aspirations in physical therapy. She was a senior studying kinesiology with plans to pursue a doctorate in physical therapy. Annie was transported to Whitman County Jail, where she was booked and cited for Driving Under the Influence (RCW 46.61.502), a gross misdemeanor offense in Washington State. As a first-time offender, she was eligible for bail, which was set at $500. She was released pending her court appearance. In addition to criminal charges, Annie faces administrative penalties including a driver's license suspension. She was provided information about appealing the suspension within 7 days, which requires a $375 non-refundable fee. Important Reminder: This case highlights a common misconception about alcohol metabolism. The "one hour per drink" rule is often insufficient—the more accurate guideline is approximately two hours per drink, though this varies by individual factors including weight, metabolism, food consumption, and type of alcohol consumed. When in doubt, always arrange alternative transportation. The only safe BAC for driving is 0.00%. Charges: Driving Under the Influence (RCW 46.61.502) - Gross Misdemeanor Administrative License Suspension (pending)
