Around 4:58 PM on July 4, 2025, Patrolman Nicola Giannotte with the Eatontown Police Department initially responded to a report of 2 shoplifters being detained at Target on 56 State Route 36. He made contact with the asset protection employee, who informed the officers that a male and a female attempted to exit the store with unpaid items that they had concealed. The female was identified as 21-year-old Nadene Gardiner, and the male was identified as 18-year-old DeShawn Brown. The asset protection employees showed the officers surveillance footage where they concealed underwear and apparel. Patrolmen Andrew Huisman and Daniel Finelli arrived on scene to assist shortly afterwards. It was determined that Nadene attempted to steal $62 worth of items, while DeShawn attempted to steal $43.99 worth of items. Since the store decided to press charges, Patrolman Giannotte placed Nadene under arrest for shoplifting, while Patrolman Huisman placed DeShawn under arrest for shoplifting. After they were placed under arrest, each shoplifter was placed in the patrol car and subsequently transported to the Eatontown Police Department for further processing. At police HQ, Nadene and Deshawn were finger printed and photographed.
