Watch this police interrogation with intense raw interrogation from the interrogation room as police conduct a full interrogation of a suspect. This raw interrogation footage captures every moment of the suspect interview, complete with deception detection techniques, and criminal psychology in true JCS style interrogation. The Background Steven Edward Riley Jr., 51, of Minot, ND, and Ina Thea Kenoyer, then 47, had been in a relationship for about 10 years and lived together. Riley had children from prior relationships, including a son, Ryan Riley. Kenoyer was not legally married to Riley. North Dakota does not recognize common-law marriage. In the weeks before his death, Riley and Kenoyer both believed he was about to receive a large inheritance (commonly reported as about $30 million) after an email claiming a lawyer would complete the transfer. Investigators later concluded the inheritance was almost certainly an online scam and was never going to be paid. Friends told police Riley planned to end the relationship after receiving the money. Kenoyer believed she was entitled to a share as his “common-law wife” and later said she intended to split money with his son. Police cited a financial motive tied to that expected inheritance and to Riley’s plan to leave her. The Crime Date of illness: September 3, 2023. Riley went to Minot International Airport expecting to meet a lawyer about the purported inheritance. No lawyer arrived. Friends said his condition declined rapidly there. Kenoyer delayed seeking help. Friends urged a hospital visit; she did not call for an ambulance until September 4, when Riley was found unresponsive. He was taken to Trinity Hospital in Minot, then flown to a Bismarck hospital. He died September 5, 2023. Cause of death (autopsy): ethylene glycol poisoning (the toxic chemical in antifreeze), at lethal levels in his blood. Initial tests found no alcohol. Court records and later reporting state Kenoyer mixed antifreeze into sweet tea she prepared for him on September 3; the sweetness can mask the chemical. She later admitted this in the investigation/plea context. Witnesses said she had thrown some of Riley’s belongings outside that afternoon after learning he planned to leave. She did not promptly get him medical care while he was clearly ill. The Investigation Friends and family contacted Minot Police soon after the death, saying they suspected poisoning and reporting that Kenoyer mentioned antifreeze at the hospital before labs or doctors had told her that. Kenoyer’s early explanations: she claimed Riley had been drinking all day and had heat stroke. Toxicology did not support alcohol intoxication. She also suggested possible accidental ingestion or a tainted cigarette. Search of the shared Minot home found antifreeze-related items, including a plastic mug with antifreeze in the garage and an old Windex bottle containing bright green liquid in the living room. When detectives told her North Dakota does not recognize common-law marriage and she would not inherit as a spouse, she became angry, according to the arrest affidavit. She initially denied guilt and later requested a lawyer. Police described the case as complex. Arrest warrant executed October 30, 2023. Charge: Class AA felony murder (intentional, knowing, or with extreme indifference). Bond set at $1 million. Conviction and Sentencing Only defendant: Ina Thea Kenoyer. No co-defendant was charged. She changed her plea and pleaded guilty to the Class AA murder charge on May 26, 2024, in North Central District Court (Ward County), Judge Richard Hagar. That avoided trial. Sentencing: October 16, 2024. Court accepted a joint recommendation: 50 years in prison, 25 years to serve, 25 years suspended, plus 10 years supervised probation after release, and $3,455 restitution to Riley’s family. Credit for time served from arrest. Maximum possible had been life without parole. Kenoyer made no statement at sentencing. Victim impact statements came from Riley’s sister, Stephanie Gonzalez, and his son, Ryan Riley. Reported estimated release around January 27, 2045, at Dakota Women’s Correctional Facility. true crime, law and crime network, interrogation, interrogation analysis, red thread interrogations, interrogation jcs inspired, interrogation jcs style, interrogation psychology, interrogation psychology jcs inspired, new interrogations 2026,interrogation breakdown, police interrogation psychology, bodycam, interview, case analysis, bodycam footage, crime investigation, police interrogation, suspect interview, int, interrogations 2026,interrogation videos, jcs true crime
