A routine traffic stop escalates dramatically when an officer confronts a highly distressed driver suspected of impairment. On an April afternoon, a staff member reported a potentially impaired teacher driving erratically near a school. Officer Perz located the silver 2015 Hyundai driving slowly towards a landscaping trailer and initiated a stop. The driver claimed a panic attack, but officers observed clear indicators of impairment. After backup arrived, the driver was instructed to exit her vehicle for field sobriety exercises, initially refusing but eventually complying. Despite her emotional state, subsequent exercises, including the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus, Walk and Turn, and One Leg Stand, revealed significant impairment, leading to her arrest for driving under the influence. A search of her vehicle uncovered six bottles of vodka, and her later breath samples registered dangerously high BAC levels of 0.311% and 0.305%, nearly four times the legal limit.
