On Monday, April 13, 2026, a homicide occurred on 7th and Mitchell. Officers were seeking a vehicle tied to that homicide. Later on that afternoon, this same vehicle was involved in a shots fired incident that occurred near the 1700 Block of North 35th. Shortly thereafter, at approximately 4:47 p.m., officers observed this vehicle and attempted to make a stop. The suspect fled and a vehicle pursuit ensued. The vehicle pursuit ended when the vehicle crashed on S. 35th Street near West National Avenue. The suspect exited his vehicle and fired shots towards officers at which time several officers returned fire subsequently striking the suspect. The suspect’s firearms were recovered. No one else was struck by the gunfire. The suspect and sole occupant of the suspect vehicle, a 31-year-old male, was transported to a hospital and ultimately succumbed to his injuries. A 34-year-old that was in the crash was transported to a hospital for treatment of non-fatal injuries. The officers that discharged their firearms are a 35-year-old male with over 8 years of service, 33-year-old male with over 14 years of service, 33-year-old male with over 9 years of service, 33-year-old male with over 8 years of service, 30-year-old male with over 11 years of service, 30-year-old male with over 7 years of service, 29-year-old male with over 3 years of service and a 26-year-old male with over 7 months of service. They were placed on administrative duty as is routine in officer involved shootings. The Milwaukee Area Investigative Team will be investigating this incident. The Wauwatosa Police Department is the lead investigating agency. The Milwaukee Police Department’s Video Release Policy Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) 575, establishes criteria for when video evidence that captures officer-involved incidents that result in death or great bodily harm will be released to the public. This policy is intended to balance important interests, including the public’s interest in transparency and police accountability, the necessity of preserving the integrity of criminal and administrative investigations, and the privacy interests of individuals depicted in such videos (including victims, witnesses, bystanders, and the individuals against whom force is used). This policy creates a presumption of release. It is our goal to release video in officer involved incidents according to SOP 575 within 15 days of the incident.
