A teacher's erratic driving leads to a shocking discovery of multiple empty vodka bottles, revealing extreme impairment and a desperate explanation. On April 22, 2022, an officer working an extra detail in a church parking lot was approached by a staff member from a nearby school, reporting a potentially impaired teacher driving. The staff member indicated the individual had just passed them and appeared to be under the influence. The officer quickly located a silver 2015 Hyundai driving slowly and erratically towards a landscaping trailer, prompting an immediate traffic stop. Upon contact, the driver informed the officer she was experiencing a panic attack, but the officer observed multiple indicators consistent with impairment. Due to being on an extra duty assignment, backup officers were requested and arrived to take over the DUI investigation. The driver stated she had been instructed to leave the school and was distraught. When asked to exit the vehicle for field sobriety exercises (FSEs), she initially refused but eventually complied. During the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test, the Walk and Turn test, and the One Leg Stand test, the driver exhibited significant difficulties, failing to maintain balance, follow instructions, or perform the exercises adequately. For instance, she did not touch heel-to-toe, turned improperly, and put her foot down prematurely during the One Leg Stand. Based on her erratic driving behavior and her inability to successfully complete the standardized field sobriety exercises, the driver was placed under arrest for driving under the influence. During a subsequent search of her vehicle incident to arrest, officers made a startling discovery: six bottles of vodka, many of which appeared to be mostly empty. When questioned about the bottles, the driver claimed her ex-boyfriend, who "hates that I drink," had thrown them into her car after they broke up and he moved her out. She also mentioned not having "drank since my seizure" which occurred on a recent Friday. She admitted it would be her DNA on the bottles but insisted it wasn't "recent." While initially refusing breath samples, the driver later agreed and was transported to the police department. There, her breathalyzer results indicated alarmingly high blood alcohol content (BAC) levels of 0.311% and 0.305%, nearly four times the legal limit of 0.08%. The driver was subsequently cited for DUI and transferred into the custody of prisoner transport, destined for the county jail. This incident highlights the severe consequences of impaired driving and the challenges law enforcement faces in such situations. --- Transparency through the lens of the law.
