Newly released body camera footage from Cleveland police captures the arrest of a 14-year-old suspect who was shot by an officer during an investigation into a series of car break-ins. The incident occurred on December 14 when officers approached a white Kia Sportage parked in a driveway on East 146th Street. The video shows the teen, alleged to be in a stolen car, sleeping in the driver’s seat. Police struck the vehicle and ordered him to raise his hands. Upon waking, the teen ignored commands and reversed the car, hitting a garage. Moments later, he shifted into drive and appeared to drive toward the officers. An officer then fired three shots, hitting the suspect in the shoulder. The car stopped, and the teen was arrested and transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The arrest followed a police investigation into over 30 car break-ins in the Midtown area. Authorities identified two juvenile suspects who had previously cut off their ankle monitors. The teen’s criminal record, dating back to July, includes car theft, trespassing, fleeing police, and gun offenses. Despite state objections, he was placed on home monitoring, cut off his GPS tracker, and went missing shortly after. He will now face various charges, including felonious assault, improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle, and receiving stolen property.
