What happens next is an intense pursuit caught on police bodycam. On May 16, 2026, at approximately 4:30 p.m., officers in Jacksonville, Florida, encountered a dangerous situation when a vehicle entered an active cycling and running course. Behind the wheel was 62-year-old Darrell Simon. According to authorities, Simon was driving recklessly through areas occupied by runners, cyclists, and spectators, putting numerous lives at risk. But he wasn't stopping. As officers attempted to intercept the vehicle, Simon continued driving despite commands to stop. Nearby DUI and traffic enforcement units joined the pursuit. Police cameras captured several frightening moments as the vehicle narrowly avoided striking runners and cyclists. Then the driver headed toward a crowded park. As Simon approached Riverside Park, Jacksonville DUI Officer Ernesto Valerio made a split-second decision. He performed a PIT maneuver, forcing the fleeing vehicle to stop.
