A routine traffic stop quickly reveals a driver struggling with basic orientation, raising immediate concerns about impairment. On the afternoon of April 22, 2022, an officer working an extra detail near a school was approached by staff expressing concern about a teacher who appeared impaired and had just driven away. The officer quickly located a silver 2015 Hyundai slowly approaching a landscaping trailer and initiated a traffic stop. Upon contact, the driver attributed her behavior to a panic attack, but the officer noted clear signs of impairment, necessitating a call for additional units to manage the DUI investigation. Once backup arrived, the driver confirmed she had been instructed to leave the school and was distraught. During roadside questioning, she exhibited significant cognitive disorientation, struggling to recall her exact address after a recent move, identify the name of the road she was on, or accurately state the current time, despite having just departed her workplace. Her performance during the subsequent field sobriety exercises was notably deficient; she failed to maintain heel-to-toe contact and turned improperly during the Walk and Turn test, and could not properly raise her foot or maintain balance during the One Leg Stand test. These observations, combined with her erratic driving, led to her arrest for driving under the influence. A search of her vehicle incident to arrest revealed six bottles of vodka. Though initially resistant, she later provided breath samples at the police department, yielding blood alcohol content levels of 0.311% and 0.305%, almost four times the legal limit.
