The crisis began on October 21, 2024, around 12:40 a.m., according to the sheriff's office, when deputies responded to a welfare check request for an individual at the Cameron residence, prompted by concerns from family members. Upon arrival, officers encountered Hoad, who allegedly fired a shotgun at them before retreating into the residence. The sheriff's office reported that Hoad issued multiple terroristic threats, including plans to carry out a mass casualty event and leave the residence armed with firearms, stating his intention to kill. The Attorney General's Office stated that after hours of negotiations, Hoad exited the residence carrying what appeared to be a long gun. He then drove his vehicle through a field to a second location. At this location, Hoad stopped in a driveway on Lower Swale and attempted to enter an occupied home, according to the sheriff's office. He then allegedly drove his vehicle toward officers, crashing into a police car. In response, officers fired their weapons, striking Hoad as he exited the vehicle. The sheriff's office reported that Hoad received immediate medical attention from a sheriff's office paramedic and Steuben ALS, who were on standby at the scene. He was then transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities recovered a shotgun from Hoad's vehicle at the scene.
