The city of Wildwood, NJ has settled a federal civil lawsuit filed by a woman who was arrested by two cops in a violent encounter that was captured on video and drew national attention to the Jersey Shore town in 2018. Wildwood had sgreed to a $325,000 settlement with Emily Weinman after she filed a lawsuit against the city alleging two seasonal police officers had “brutally and senselessly assaulted” her during a dispute over an unopened alcoholic beverage on the beach. The lawsuit alleged that the cops used excessive force and fabricated evidence against Weinman, of Philadelphia, who was 20 years old at the time and visiting the beach for Memorial Day weekend with her boyfriend, her 18-month-old child and a female friend. The purpose of this video is to provide transparency to the public. The use body worn cameras protect both law enforcement and public citizens. Body Camera footage, while not perfect, can give a reliable non biased view of a situation. By making body cam available to the public, an environment is created to ensure all citizens are treated fair and justly. The use of body cams can provide documentation and justification in a use of force situation to exonerate or hold parties accountable for their actions. Body cams have also become an invaluable training tool for law enforcement. The footage should also help citizens understand the difficult and dangerous situations law enforcement face daily. Body cam videos, while graphic at times, can and should be used for education purposes to strengthen the relationship between law enforcement and the general public.
