His radar showed a 2013 Honda Civic heading south at 64 mph in a 45 mph zone. Hickerson turned around to follow it and saw the car nearly strike the center median. He switched on his lights, but the driver kept going until near Cherry Road. When the car stopped, Hickerson approached the driver and three passengers. The driver was 20-year-old Talia Valencia. As Hickerson spoke with Valencia, he smelled alcohol. Officer Justin Petross came to the driver's side and saw two open bottles: Ice 101 schnapps and Smirnoff vodka. Hickerson called for a DWI officer to assist. Officer Jessica Martinez soon arrived and asked Valencia to step out of the car. When asked how much she had been drinking, Valencia said, "not that much." She showed signs of impairment, so Martinez offered her field sobriety tests. Martinez started with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus, or HGN, test. Valencia's eyes did not track smoothly, and Martinez saw clear signs of involuntary eye movement. They appeared when Valencia's eyes reached their limit and before they reached a 45-degree angle. During the Walk and Turn, Valencia held her arms out instead of keeping them at her sides, struggled to balance, and failed to walk heel-to-toe. On the One Leg Stand, she had trouble lifting her foot, set it down several times, and did not count aloud as told. She also could not recite the alphabet from "C" to "R" in order or count backward from 72 to 51 correctly. After seeing Valencia's erratic driving, hearing her unclear speech, and watching her struggle with the tests, Martinez arrested her for driving under the influence. The car was towed to an impound lot, and Valencia was taken to the Rio Rancho Police Department for processing. Martinez explained New Mexico's Implied Breath Consent advisory form, and Valencia agreed to give breath samples. After observing Valencia for 20 minutes, Martinez began the breath test using an Intoxilyzer. The results were 0.16% and 0.14%, well above the 0.02% legal limit for drivers under 21. After processing at the police department, another officer took Valencia to the Sandoval County Detention Center, where she was booked for driving while intoxicated. Martinez issued summonses for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, having an open container, and speeding. If you enjoyed this BodyCamBust video.
