Three people were reportedly slashed with a machete on a New York City subway before two NYPD detectives encountered the armed suspect on the platform. What followed was a tense confrontation that ended in a fatal police shooting. At approximately 9:38 a.m. on Saturday, April 11, 2026, Detectives Ryan Giuffre and Anthony Manetta were on the mezzanine serving the 4, 5, 6 and 7 subway lines in Manhattan when a civilian witness approached them with a report of a person brandishing a machete aboard a train. The detectives moved toward the platform stairs, where they encountered an injured civilian and a man later identified as 44-year-old Anthony Griffin. Griffin was ascending the stairs while holding a machete in his right hand. Detective Giuffre repeatedly ordered Griffin to drop the weapon. Griffin did not comply and descended the stairs back toward the train platform. The detectives followed and confronted him again, continuing to issue commands as he shouted and moved toward and away from them while holding the machete. According to the incident account, Griffin then moved toward Detective Giuffre with the blade facing outward. Detective Giuffre fired two rounds from his service weapon, striking Griffin. Griffin was taken into custody and transported by ambulance to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, where he was pronounced dead. The subsequent investigation determined that, before the confrontation with the detectives, Griffin had allegedly slashed three civilian victims with the machete, causing serious physical injuries. Both detectives were equipped with activated body-worn cameras during the incident. This video presents the reported sequence of events for documentary, informational and public-interest purposes. Viewer discretion is advised due to the presence of weapons and a fatal police shooting. #NYPD #PoliceBodycam #NYCSubway #Manhattan #PoliceShooting #BodycamFootage #NewYork #Machete #PoliceIncident
