A routine traffic stop takes an unexpected turn when an officer's concern for safety overrides standard procedure during a DUI investigation. Responding to a witness report of an erratic driver who damaged a sign, officers located and stopped a black 2016 Jeep. The driver, a woman with long blonde hair, was identified and immediately exhibited indicators of impairment. After admitting to consuming alcohol, she agreed to participate in field sobriety exercises, beginning with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. However, the officer abruptly terminated the exercises out of concern for her safety, subsequently placing her under arrest for driving under the influence. A search of her vehicle revealed an open container of alcohol, leading to its impoundment, and the driver was transported for further processing where she later pleaded guilty to operating under the influence and unsafe operation of a vehicle, resulting in fines, an ignition interlock device, and required attendance at an intoxicated driver resource center. --- Transparency through the lens of the law.
