Officers with the San Antonio Police Department were called to a park on the Southside of San Antonio after reports of a shooting around 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 29, San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said during a press conference held around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. Law enforcement arrived at the park between Gillette Blvd. and S. Zarzamora St. a little over two minutes after the shooting report. Upon arrival, officers found a 23-year-old man firing a handgun at the volleyball court inside the park. Two officers exited the police vehicle and were immediately fired upon by the shooter, according to McManus. The officers returned fire, shooting about 10 shots at the man, who exchanged around 12 shots at the responding officers, who have been on the force for four to five years. After being struck, the shooter, who reportedly has an arrest history with the police department, ran about 50 yards before collapsing in a field, after which he was taken to the hospital. There is still no word on why the man was shooting or what he was shooting at, but police reported that there were no injuries from the incident apart from the shooter's. McManus did not say what condition the shooter was in when he was taken to the hospital. What police have told the public is all preliminary information. That information is subject to change as law enforcement continues to process evidence at the scene and investigate the incident.
