September 2024. A 25-year-old woman walks into a police station in Carlsbad, New Mexico and tells detectives her daughter has been in the ground for a year. That night she leads two sergeants through a barbed wire fence with flashlights and points at three rocks behind a trailer. For eleven months, both families had been given the same one-line answer whenever they asked where the baby was. Nobody had ever checked whether that answer was true.
