Someone had called 911 to report a black Jeep driving the wrong way. Just a few minutes later, at 4:03 AM, Sergeant Scott Herchick found the Jeep, a black 2021 Cherokee, facing north in the southbound lane. The vehicle wasn’t in park, and the driver was asleep behind the wheel. Sergeant Herchick knocked on the window several times until she finally woke up. He told her to put the car in park, and she did. The driver, later identified as Melissa, was asked for her ID and registration. She couldn’t find her documents right away and showed signs of being drunk. When asked how much she had to drink, she admitted, “probably too much.” She later said she had several beers earlier that night. At that point, Patrolman James Lattoz arrived to help. Based on their suspicions, Melissa was asked to step outside to do roadside sobriety tests. Patrolman Lattoz started with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test. Next, Melissa was asked to walk in a straight line, heel-to-toe. She failed to keep her arms at her sides, didn’t touch heel-to-toe on each step, and took the wrong number of steps back. The third test was the One Leg Stand. She didn’t lift her foot properly and put it down early. She was given another chance to do the test, but she failed again. Because she was found asleep in her car, had a strong alcohol smell, and couldn’t do the tests correctly, Melissa was arrested. Before she was taken away, Lieutenant Heather Glogolich from Morris Township searched her and then placed her in a patrol car. Her vehicle was towed and held for 12 hours under the law called John’s Law. Patrolman Lattoz then took Melissa to the police station for more processing. At the station, Melissa read the standard rights for drivers and agreed to provide a breath sample. Her alcohol level was 0.22%, well over the legal limit of 0.08%. After testing, she was released to her mother pending her court date. She signed a warning about her potential legal trouble. Patrolman Lattoz gave her citations for operating under the influence and careless driving. Court records show her DUI charge was dismissed on January 4, 2024. She was found guilty of careless driving. Because of this, her license was revoked for 30 days, and she paid $240 in fines. 3:43 how much did you have to drink tonight probably too much okay 6:20 He's not very good at explaining.
