During the attack, he slashed the owner across the forehead with a knife. Minutes later, while fleeing in the stolen Durango through Farmington, Shoemaker-Gonzalez struck a state DOT snowplow blade, lost control, and crashed into a rock wall at the Westwood II Condominium Complex. After abandoning the wrecked Durango, he attempted to steal two more vehicles — a Nissan Versa and a Nissan Rogue — before successfully carjacking a Toyota RAV4, again cutting the owner with a knife. Farmington Police alerted Bristol Police that the stolen RAV4 was approaching the city at high speed. Officers quickly located the vehicle at the Mountain Laurel Apartment Complex. Around 12:30 p.m., Sergeant Joshua Pratt spotted the RAV4 entering the complex and attempted a felony stop, but Shoemaker-Gonzalez accelerated away, driving over snow-covered grass until the vehicle became stuck against a guardrail. He then fled on foot. As officers closed in, Shoemaker-Gonzalez circled a building and unexpectedly climbed into Sergeant Pratt’s unattended, running police cruiser on Quaker Lane. Multiple officers rushed toward the vehicle, giving commands for him to stop. As Shoemaker-Gonzalez put the cruiser into gear and began driving forward, Officer Seth Petzing — positioned slightly ahead and to the side — fired four rounds at the stolen cruiser as it sped past. One round struck the cruiser’s fender; three penetrated the driver’s side door, hitting Shoemaker-Gonzalez in the finger and both legs. Despite his injuries, Shoemaker-Gonzalez sped away in the police cruiser, narrowly missing a school bus and clipping an apartment building before fleeing another 2.5 miles. The chase finally ended when he crashed into Palma’s Diner on Stafford Street. At the hospital, tests showed he had a .102 blood alcohol content and tested positive for PCP, cocaine metabolites, and oxycodone. Shoemaker-Gonzalez was released from the hospital three days later and taken into custody. He told investigators he had recently relapsed into drug use after being released from jail and claimed he didn’t remember much of the day. He also stated he didn’t know why police shot him and said he planned to file a lawsuit. Disclaimer: This video is presented for educational, documentary, and informational purposes only.
