It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: On October 27, 2024, around midnight, Officer Donna Zorbas from the Wauconda Police saw a white 2018 Chevy Silverado swerving and speeding north on Highway 12 near Patten Drive. She started following the truck and pulled it over before the Route 176 overpass. When she turned on her emergency lights, she saw the driver throw a can out of the window. The driver finally stopped after turning right onto Pine Street. Officer Zorbas approached the truck and spoke with the driver, identified as Lucia De La Torre. Two children sat in the backseat, not wearing seat belts. Lucia was asked for her license, but she only had an Illinois ID card. Her driver’s license had been revoked after a previous DUI. While talking, the officer smelled alcohol and saw signs Lucia was impaired. More officers, Robert Pet and Jonathan Finze, arrived to help. Officer Zorbas asked Lucia to step out and perform field sobriety tests. The first test was the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN). During it, Zorbas saw her eyes not tracking smoothly. Nystagmus appeared at maximum deviation, and her eyes jerked before 45 degrees. After some hesitation, Lucia refused to do any further tests. Due to her wild driving, signs of impairment, and poor performance on tests, Officer Zorbas arrested Lucia for DUI. Her brother was called to take care of her two children. Lucia was handcuffed, placed in the police car, and taken to the police station. During the arrest, officers found an open can of White Claw in her vehicle. At the station, Lucia was read the warning form but refused to give breath samples. It was known she had a DUI in 2017.
