Buffalo, New York — May 23, 2026. Buffalo Police officers were flagged down by a pedestrian who identified a man reportedly wanted in connection with a stabbing the previous day. When officers approached 35-year-old Derrick Harris, they say they immediately observed him carrying a box cutter and a pair of scissors. An officer attempted to de-escalate the situation and repeatedly ordered Harris to drop the weapons. According to police, Harris refused and at one point told officers to “shoot me.” The encounter quickly became physical when Harris allegedly attacked an officer with the box cutter. Another officer deployed a Taser, bringing Harris to the ground. However, police say Harris broke free and ran into traffic while still armed. Officers pursued him into the roadway. Moments later, an officer fired two shots, striking Harris. Officers immediately began providing medical assistance. Harris was transported to Erie County Medical Center, while the injured officer was also taken there for treatment. Police reported recovering the weapons at the scene. Harris remained hospitalized, and additional charges were pending at the time of the report.
