PAUL — The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) has identified the officer who discharged his firearm during an officer involved shooting incident on Sunday, September 15, in St. Paul. Officer Steven Mattson has been with the St. Paul Police Department for less than a year. He is on standard administrative leave. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner on Monday identified the deceased as Ronald Kerry Davis, 31, of Little Canada. Davis died of gunshot wounds. Officer Mattson’s body camera captured the incident. Officer Mattson was on patrol at 5:50 p.m. Sunday and had just stopped at a stop sign at the intersection of Thomas Avenue West and Griggs Street when a vehicle driven by Davis rear-ended Mattson’s squad. Both men exited their vehicles, at which time Davis confronted Officer Mattson with a knife. Davis ignored repeated commands to drop the knife. At one point during the encounter Officer Mattson discharged his firearm, striking Davis. Responding officers and St. Paul Fire Department personnel attempted lifesaving measures but Davis was pronounced deceased at the scene.
