On the evening of August 30, 2022, West Orange Police responded to a report of a vehicle crash into a home on Rock Spring Road. When officers arrived, they found a white 2015 Lexus RX3 in the driveway with airbags deployed. The driver was identified as Aretha M. Dooley-Malloy, a West Orange resident. When questioned, Ms. Malloy repeatedly told officers, “I have to use the bathroom,” instead of explaining the accident. She later claimed she wasn’t in a crash, but had pulled over to take a picture. However, officers noted damage to the property, including the lawn, a sprinkler head, a brick wall, and bushes. Officers asked for her license, registration, and insurance, but she did not provide them. They noticed the smell of alcohol and bloodshot eyes. Ms. Malloy admitted she had been drinking earlier that day. She was asked to do field sobriety tests. During the tests, she repeatedly said she had to use the bathroom due to a medical condition. She had difficulty following instructions and did not perform the tests properly. Based on her behavior and the officer’s observations, she was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI). At police headquarters, Ms. Malloy was uncooperative. She refused to sign her Miranda Rights, refused to give a breath sample, and interrupted fingerprinting by pulling her hand away while saying, “Karma is a bitch.” At one point, she admitted to driving and swerving to avoid hitting a deer. She was charged with: Driving While Intoxicated (39:4-50) Refusal to Provide Breath Sample Driving/Parking an Unregistered Vehicle Failure to Show Proof of Insurance She was released into the custody of Councilman Bill Rutherford, who signed the release paperwork. Following the arrest, another administrator welcomed students at Liberty Middle School.
