The robbery began when five masked suspects, armed with hammers, entered the store and proceeded to violently smash display cases to steal jewelry. As the suspects fled, they were confronted by mall security and discharged an "aerosol irritant," injuring two people, before escaping in a stolen white Mercedes SUV. York Regional Police (YRP) quickly located the vehicle and attempted to block it in dense highway traffic on the 404, but the suspects drove around the cruiser and continued to flee. The pursuit ended in Markham when the suspect vehicle crashed into a group of cars stopped at an intersection. As the occupants ran from the crash scene, multiple officers immediately pursued on foot. Police air support provided a live aerial view, guiding officers on the ground and leading to the eventual arrest of four of the five suspects, with one being held at gunpoint. Following the incident, four people were charged, including three teenagers and an 18-year-old, with charges including robbery with an offensive weapon and assault with a weapon. Approximately $100,000 in jewelry was recovered. The fifth suspect remains at large.
