Please like, comment, and SHARE! 🙏 🔍 Episode Overview: At approximately 2:21 AM on January 29, 2023, Officer Edward Jennings of the Middletown Township Police Department noticed a 2020 Honda Civic swerving and speeding near Route 36 and Thompson Avenue. As the car got closer to Main Street, the driver turned right at a traffic light without using a signal. Officer Jennings continued to follow the vehicle until it stopped in the parking lot of Port Monmouth Elementary School. He turned on his emergency lights to pull the driver over and approached the car, identifying the driver as 28-year-old Mikala Minix. He requested Mikala's license, registration, and insurance, but she looked unsure. While talking to her, he noticed a smell of alcohol. Soon after, Officer Kenneth Ross arrived to perform field sobriety tests. During the questioning, Mikala revealed that she had been out with friends after finishing her shift at Char Steakhouse in Red Bank. She also admitted to drinking alcohol before driving her car. Officer Jennings, suspecting impairment, instructed Mikala to exit the vehicle and perform field sobriety tests. Officer Ross directed her to a flat area to begin the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. During this test, he noticed that Mikala's eyes did not move smoothly, showed distinct and sustained jerking when her eyes were fully turned, and began jerking before reaching a 45-degree angle. The next test was the Walk and Turn. In this test, Mikala did not walk heel-to-toe as required and exceeded the instructed nine steps. Finally, for the One Leg Stand test, Mikala struggled to lift her foot correctly and showed poor balance. Officer Jennings arrested Mikala for driving under the influence due to her erratic driving, the smell of alcohol on her, and her failure to pass the field sobriety tests. Her vehicle was searched and impounded for a required 12-hour hold as per John’s Law. Officer Jennings then took Mikala to Middletown Township Police Headquarters for processing. At police headquarters, Mikala was informed of her rights but chose not to answer any questions. She remained uncooperative and argued with the officers. Patrolman Ross observed her for 20 minutes and read the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators to her. Despite this, Mikala refused to provide breath samples for testing.
