Earlier that day, a woman contacted officers stating that a 51-year-old man had made threatening statements toward her. Officers attempted to make contact at the residence, but the man refused to answer the door or speak with police. Several hours later, the woman called 911 again with heightened concern, reporting that the man appeared intoxicated, was still armed, and had been sending alarming messages. Given the escalating nature of the situation, officers returned to the area to conduct a welfare check and prevent potential harm to the man or others. As officers were preparing a controlled response, they observed the man leave the residence, enter a vehicle, and drive away. Due to the prior reports of threats, intoxication, and firearm possession, officers initiated a traffic stop on Tremont Boulevard to prevent further risk. During the stop, officers issued repeated commands for the driver to shut off the vehicle. Moments later, shots were fired from inside the car toward responding officers. Police immediately returned fire, striking the driver. The exchange lasted only a brief moment. The man was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries. No officers were physically injured during the incident. The Michigan State Police have assumed responsibility for the investigation, as is standard in officer-involved incidents. In the days following, family members disclosed that the man had been experiencing significant emotional distress related to the unresolved death of his son and had recently exhibited unstable behavior involving a firearm.
