It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: On the evening of May 8, 2022, at 7:48 PM, Patrolman Michael Poon from the Sparta Township Police Department noticed a 2015 Toyota Camry speeding at 85 MPH in a 55 MPH zone on Route 15 North. The car was moving so quickly that he had to call another officer ahead to stop it before he could reach it himself. Patrolwoman Arlene Lippencott arrived on the scene and pulled over the vehicle at the 14-mile marker on Route 15. As she got closer to the car, she spoke to the driver, 31-year-old Stacey G., informing her that she was going 85 MPH and asking if she knew the speed limit. Just a minute later, Patrolman Poon arrived to assist. Patrolman Poon walked up to the car and noticed the smell of alcohol. He asked Stacey, the passenger, to step out so he could check if either she or the driver might be under the influence. While talking to Stacey outside, he could smell alcohol on her too. The driver mentioned she had just come from Kenilworth and admitted to drinking about two glasses of wine earlier. She also revealed that she was pregnant. Feeling concerned about possible impairment, Patrolman Poon suggested that Stacey try some field sobriety tests, and she agreed to take them. The first test conducted was the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test, led by Patrolwoman Lippencott. She noted that Patrolman Poon observed all six signs of impairment while Stacey was undergoing the HGN test. Next came the Walk and Turn test, where Stacey struggled to walk heel-to-toe, swaying and using her arms to stay balanced. For the final test, the One Leg Stand, Stacey failed to lift her foot properly and again had to use her arms for support. After observing Stacey's driving behavior, Patrolman Poon noted her traffic violations, her admission to drinking alcohol, and her struggle with the field sobriety tests. This led him to arrest her for driving under the influence. Following her arrest, her car was searched for illegal items, and Patrolwoman Lippencott took her husband to the police station because he also admitted to drinking and being unable to drive. When they arrived at Sparta Township Police Headquarters, Patrolman Poon informed Stacey of the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators and read her Miranda Rights. Stacey agreed to take a breath test, and the results showed her blood alcohol concentration was 0.14%. Once Stacey finished the processing, her mother came to pick her up after signing a form that warned about potential liabilities.
