On March 6, 2023, at about 3:43 PM, three women filled shopping bags at an Ulta Beauty in Vernon Hills, Illinois and walked out. An officer found their car in the lot a short time later. It came at him head on, and within seconds he broke off and told dispatch that he was not following. Four minutes after that, with nobody behind it, the same car ran a red light, struck a pickup truck that then struck a third vehicle, left the road and went into a wooden fence. The figures here come from the police report's own inventory and property tables rather than from press coverage: $13,689 in merchandise taken, $12,879 recovered and $810 never recovered, plus 46 items of Nike clothing valued at $2,448. Reported charges: retail theft, 2 counts (720 ILCS 5/16-25(a)(14)); aggravated fleeing or eluding a peace officer by disobeying two or more traffic control devices (625 ILCS 5/11-204.1(a)(4)); resisting a peace officer causing injury (720 ILCS 5/31-1(a-7)); driving while license revoked or suspended (625 ILCS 5/6-303(b)); interference with a peace officer, 2 counts (720 ILCS 5/31-1(a)); obstructing identification (720 ILCS 5/31-4.5); disobeying a red light, 2 counts (625 ILCS 5/11-306). The driver was later additionally charged with driving under the influence of drugs. Nobody is named here. Everyone shown is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
