A routine check on a disabled vehicle quickly uncovers severe impairment, leading to a challenging roadside investigation. Sergeant Gajewski initiated contact with a driver whose SUV had a flat tire on Shore Road. Suspicion arose due to the driver's slurred speech and the distinct odor of alcohol emanating from the vehicle, escalating when she refused to provide identification documents and denied consuming alcohol. Field sobriety exercises were offered, but the individual was unable to follow instructions during the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test. She struggled significantly with the Walk and Turn test, failing to maintain a straight line or count steps, and stumbled during the One Leg Stand test, leaning on her vehicle for support, which led to its early termination after only 21 seconds. Based on these observations and a subsequent breath test at the station revealing a BAC of 0.332%, the driver was placed under arrest for operating under the influence, reckless driving, careless driving, and leaving the scene of an accident.
