SUSPECT ARRESTED IN FEBRUARY DRIVE-BY SHOOTING THAT INJURED 16-YEAR-OLD IN DELTONA A February shooting that injured a 16-year-old boy who was babysitting an infant has been solved after an extensive investigation by Volusia Sheriff’s Office detectives. Miguel Miranda, 19 (DOB 2/18/2004), of Deltona, is charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and firing into an occupied dwelling in the Feb. 12 shooting on Trade Street in Deltona. Deputies responded to the shooting around 7:20 that morning, finding the 16-year-old victim with a gunshot wound to his arm. The victim had been sleeping in a front bedroom with his 7-week-old nephew when 2 shots came through the window, one striking the 16-year-old. The infant wasn’t injured. Initially, there were few leads in the investigation. Detective Devon Barrett canvassed the neighborhood for video and found footage of a potential suspect vehicle at the house. Multiple follow-up interviews with the victim, friends and family members helped develop leads toward a suspect and several associates. Det. Barrett identified the registered owner of the suspect vehicle and found connections to multiple persons of interest, including Miranda. On April 1, Miranda was the driver in a crash in Daytona Beach that killed three of his friends, including two who had been interviewed during the shooting investigation. During the crash investigation, a 9mm handgun was recovered from near the driver’s seat where Miranda was sitting. When sent for ballistics comparison, that handgun was identified as the same one that fired the bullet recovered from the bedroom on Trade Street. A search warrant for historical cell phone data also showed Miranda’s phone was in the area of the shooting at the time it occurred, and left the county immediately after. Miranda was located and arrested Wednesday evening by members of VSO’s Deltona Crime Suppression Team, and he was transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail, where he remains in custody with no bond as of this writing.
