A routine speeding stop quickly escalates when an officer detects signs of impairment, leading to a critical roadside assessment. On May 8, 2022, around 7:48 PM, a patrol officer observed a 2015 Toyota Camry traveling 85 MPH in a 55 MPH zone on Route 15 North. The vehicle's excessive speed required another officer to intercept the driver. Upon Patrolman Poon's arrival, he detected the distinct odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from the vehicle, prompting the driver, a 31-year-old woman identified as Stacey, to be asked to exit her vehicle for further evaluation. Her immediate response, expressing concern about being barefoot, underscored the unfolding tension as the interaction intensified. During the conversation outside the vehicle, the officer again noted the odor of alcohol from her person, and she admitted to consuming two glasses of wine earlier, also revealing she was pregnant. Based on this suspicion, standardized field sobriety exercises were offered and agreed upon. Patrolwoman Lippencott administered the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test, observing all six indicators of impairment. Subsequent Walk and Turn and One Leg Stand tests, administered by Patrolman Poon, also revealed significant difficulties, including staggering, raising arms for balance, and improper foot placement. These observations, coupled with her traffic infractions and alcohol admission, led to her arrest for driving under the influence. At headquarters, Alcotest results confirmed a blood alcohol content of 0.14%, significantly exceeding the legal limit. She was later processed and released to a guardian, facing multiple summonses including operating under the influence, speeding, reckless driving, careless driving, and failure to use lamps when required. --- Transparency through the lens of the law.
