It really helps us do original reporting like this. 🔍 Episode Overview: At 3:16 AM on May 23, 2021, Patrolman Travis Dilts and Patrolman Rueger responded to an accident at Monroe Avenue and North 19th Street in Kenilworth, New Jersey. When Patrolman Dilts arrived, he noticed that the gray Volkswagen's front passenger side was damaged, and its tire had come off the rim. The front bumper was also heavily damaged. After Patrolman Rueger joined him, Dilts asked him to check for any nearby parked cars that might have been hit. Patrolman Dilts traced some indentations to a vehicle on Cross Street, which showed significant damage on the driver side. Patrolman Dilts saw G. Tavares getting out of the Volkswagen. As he got closer, he smelled alcohol on her breath. Her eyes looked red and watery. She spoke with a slur and struggled to stay upright. When he asked if she had been drinking, she first said just a little. Then, she said she had two beers. Soon after, she changed her answer to three beers and finally admitted to having "a few" beers, though she didn't know exactly how many. Due to concerns about intoxication, Tavares was given the chance to take field sobriety tests. The first was the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test. The officer noticed Tavares had trouble tracking a moving object smoothly and showed signs of nystagmus both at the maximum angle and before reaching 45 degrees. During the Walk and Turn test, Tavares struggled to keep her balance and kept her arms at her sides. She did not walk heel-to-toe and took extra steps than she counted. In the final One Leg Stand test, Tavares could not keep her leg straight or maintain her balance. After the officer noticed signs of intoxication and observed her performance on the sobriety tests, Tavares was arrested for driving under the influence. As she was taken to the police station, she chatted a lot and expressed her apologies. Once they arrived at the station, Tavares agreed to provide breath samples. After testing her breath with the alcotest machine, the results showed her blood alcohol content was 0.14%. After the officer noticed signs of intoxication and observed her performance on the sobriety tests, Tavares was arrested for driving under the influence.
