Please like, comment, and SHARE! 🙏 🔍 Episode Overview: At almost midnight on June 23, 2023, the Westfield Police Department received a call about a car crash involving a 2008 Jeep and a 2008 GMC wagon near Lawrence Avenue and East Dudley Avenue. Sergeant Piotr Wierzbicki was the first officer on the scene and had a chat with the Jeep's driver, 44-year-old Tamela Beene. Officer Markovy Jacques took over at 11:53 PM and started asking Tamela questions about where she had been, where she was going, and if she had anything to drink. So, Tamela was telling Officer Jacques that she was on her way home from her friend's place and had a bit of a tiff with her ex. When the officers dug deeper, she said she hadn't touched any booze. But get this - they found prescription meds in her car and could apparently smell alcohol on her. So, they offered her a shot at some field sobriety exercises. Classic. Officer Jacques kicked things off with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. He noticed a lack of smooth pursuit, distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation, and the onset of nystagmus prior to 45 degrees. Then, he had Tamela do the alphabet recitation from C to W. But, oops! Tamela failed to recite the alphabet in the correct sequence as instructed. Next up was the Walk and Turn test. During this test, Tamela couldn't walk heel-to-toe and didn't take the correct number of steps. Finally, let's not forget the One Leg Stand test, where Tamela struggled to raise her foot in the proper fashion and failed to maintain her balance while swaying. Whew, it wasn't her finest moment! So get this - because Tamela's car broke down and she couldn't get her story straight, Officer Jacques decided she was driving under the influence and hauled her in. And get this, they found prescription drugs in her car! Officer John Swiderski wanted to tow her car as required by John’s Law. Can you believe that? So, check this out: Tamela tagged along with Officer Jacques and Officer Swiderski to Westfield Police HQ. Once there, Lieutenant Jason Rodger carried out a 20-minute observation, and Officer Swiderski nailed her with the Standard Statement for Motor Vehicle Operators. After the observation sesh, Tamela was all about having a lawyer present and flat-out declined to blow into the breathalyzer. Lieutenant Rodger logged her "no thanks" into the breath test machine, slapping Tamela with an extra charge. After Tamela was processed, she was released to a sober adult pending her court appearance after they signed the Potential Liability Warning form on Tamela’s behalf. Officer Jacques issued Tamela the following summonses: Operating under the influence, refusal to submit breath samples for testing, failure to observe stop or yield signs, and failure to possess driver insurance card.
